OMEGA 3 PREMIUM

BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM contains highly concentrated fish oil derived from anchovies sourced from Chile. A daily dose of two softgels provides 940 mg of EPA and 440 mg of DHA—a total of 1,380 mg of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in a 2:1 ratio. EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, while DHA supports the maintenance of normal brain function and good vision. The oxidative quality and purity of the finished capsules are monitored and meet established limits.

Why anchovies?

Anchovies are small fish that naturally contain high levels of EPA and DHA. Unlike farmed fish, the composition of their fat is not influenced by the plant-based ingredients in their feed.

  • They have a naturally “marine” fatty acid profile derived from anchovy oil. Anchovies are small pelagic fish that are naturally rich in EPA and DHA. Anchovy oil is well-suited for the production of highly concentrated oil.
  • The fat composition of farmed salmon is more significantly influenced by feed. As the proportion of plant-based ingredients in the feed increases, the proportion of EPA and DHA may decrease, while the proportion of omega-6 may increase. In Norwegian farmed salmon, the median EPA + DHA content fell by more than 60% between 2005 and 2020, although salmon remains a significant source of these nutrients.
  • Less dependence on feed composition. With anchovies, there is no question of what proportion of fish, plant, or other fats was used in the fish’s diet. With farmed salmon, the feed can have a significant impact on the final EPA and DHA content.
  • Lower potential for bioaccumulation of certain contaminants. Anchovies are small, short-lived fish at a lower level of the food chain. This is generally beneficial, particularly with regard to their levels of mercury and other toxins.

Why Take BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are conditionally essential nutrients; although the body can produce them to a limited extent from the essential alpha-linolenic acid, the conversion rate is low; therefore, it is important to obtain them directly from food or dietary supplements.

Who is BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM suitable for?

  • for people who eat little or irregular amounts of fatty seafood,
  • for people who want to specifically supplement their diet with EPA and DHA,
  • for people looking for a concentrated product with clearly stated EPA and DHA content,
  • for users who do not want to take a large number of capsules containing low-concentration fish oil,
  • for long-term omega-3 supplementation as part of a balanced lifestyle
  • for athletes and physically active people
  • for seniors
  • for people who want to support normal brain and heart function and maintain their vision

This product is not a substitute for eating fish or for a balanced diet.

Safety and Warnings

  • Not suitable for people with fish allergies,
  • Consult a doctor before use if you are taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents,
  • Use requires consultation with a doctor in cases of known atrial fibrillation or severe cardiovascular disease

Origin of the oil

BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM is the only product in our portfolio that is not manufactured at our facility in Cífer, Slovakia. The oil from Chilean anchovies is processed and encapsulated directly in Chile, from where it is imported as finished softgels.

Encapsulation at the source reduces the number of handling and transport steps during which the concentrated oil would be exposed to oxygen. Encapsulation in a soft capsule then helps protect it from further oxidation.

This protection is important because EPA and DHA are extremely sensitive to oxidation. When they degrade, they produce breakdown products that reduce the oil’s quality and can cause a rancid or unpleasant fishy odor, aftertaste, and poorer gastrointestinal tolerance.

Oxidation and Purity Testing of BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM

The GOED ( Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3) guidelines define voluntary but globally recognized standards for the quality and freshness of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oils). These parameters monitor the degree of oil deterioration (oxidation) using three indicators, and BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM meets all three.

In addition to oxidation parameters, GOED also sets strict limits for environmental contaminants. BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM has a controlled content of heavy metals, PCBs, and dioxins, with all values below the permissible level.

Parameter Limit
PCB ≤ 45 ppb
Dioxin-like PCBs ≤ 1.5 ppt
Dioxins – PCDD + PCDF ≤ 1 ppt
Lead ≤ 0.05 ppm
Mercury ≤ 0.1 ppm
Cadmium ≤ 0.1 ppm
Inorganic arsenic ≤ 0.1 ppm

Safety Inspection

The omega-3 fatty acids in BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM are also tested for contaminants resulting from processing. The limits of 1,000 μg/kg for glycidyl esters and 2,500 μg/kg for 3-MCPD esters correspond to the EU maximum limits for fish oils.

Parameter Limit
Glycidyl esters ≤ 1,000 ppb
3-MCPD esters ≤ 2,500 ppb
3-MCPD esters + glycidyl esters ≤ 3,500 ppb

The omega-3 fatty acids in BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM are also tested for microbiological quality

Parameter Limit
Total number of microorganisms ≤ 1,000 CFU/g
Yeast and Molds ≤ 25 CFU/g
E. coli ≤ 0.40 MPN/g
Salmonella negative/25 ml
Staphylococcus aureus negative/25 ml

Recommended Use

Take two capsules daily with a meal or immediately after a meal, ideally with a main meal that also contains some fat. In a human absorption study, the absorption of EPA and DHA from ethyl esters was significantly increased when taken with a meal higher in fat.

It doesn’t matter whether they are taken in the morning or in the evening. What’s more important is consistency, taking them with meals, and long-term use.

The Importance of the Combination of EPA and DHA

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids whose physiological roles differ in part, but which together have complementary effects.

Heart

EPA and DHA contribute to proper heart function.
The beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA + DHA. BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM provides 1,380 mg in a single daily dose.

Brain

DHA helps maintain proper brain function.
The beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA. A daily dose of BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM provides 440 mg of DHA.

Vision

DHA helps maintain good vision. The beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA, which is provided by two BIOMIN OMEGA 3 PREMIUM capsules.

The daily dose provides sufficient DHA for the normal development of the brain and vision of the fetus and breastfed infant in pregnant and breastfeeding women. This requires 200 mg of DHA per day in addition to the recommended intake of 250 mg of EPA + DHA.

Recommended Storage Conditions

Omega-3 fatty acids are sensitive to oxygen, light, and high temperatures, which accelerate their oxidation. Therefore, store the capsules in their original, sealed packaging, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not leave them on a windowsill, near a stove or radiator, or in a hot car for an extended period of time. After removing a capsule, reseal the package tightly.

It is better to buy omega-3 on an ongoing basis rather than stockpiling it for long-term use. Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally susceptible to oxidation, which continues even during storage. Therefore, we recommend purchasing only as much as you can consume within a reasonable amount of time. Unopened packages can be stored until the best-by date, provided they are kept in their original packaging, in a dry, dark place, and at the recommended temperature. After opening, always reseal the package tightly and do not open multiple packages at the same time.

Ingredients

Fish oil containing the omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA; capsule shell: gelatin; humectant: glycerol; purified water. EPA and DHA are present in the form of ethyl esters.

Active ingredient 1 capsule 2 capsules – daily dose
Fish oil 1,000 mg 2,000 mg
EPA at least 470 mg at least 940 mg
DHA at least 220 mg at least 440 mg
EPA + DHA at least 690 mg at least 1,380 mg

Take two soft capsules daily with a meal or immediately after a meal. A main meal containing some fat is best. You can take both capsules at once or split the dose into one capsule twice a day.

The time of day is not important. What matters more is taking it regularly with meals.

Omega-3 fatty acids are fat-soluble. Food promotes bile secretion and the activity of digestive enzymes, which play a role in their processing and absorption. This is particularly important for concentrated omega-3s in the form of ethyl esters.

During production, EPA and DHA are separated and concentrated into an ethyl ester form. This allows for a high concentration of EPA and DHA in a single capsule. In the digestive tract, the ethyl esters are broken down enzymatically, and the released EPA and DHA are then absorbed. For optimal absorption, we recommend taking the capsules with a meal containing fat.

Anchovies are small pelagic fish that are naturally rich in marine omega-3 fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of their bodies is not influenced by the plant-based components of their diet, as is the case with farm-raised fish.

Small, short-lived fish also generally have a lower potential for accumulating certain contaminants than large, long-lived predatory fish. However, purity cannot be assessed based solely on the species of fish—the purification of the oil and analytical testing of the finished product are crucial.

EPA and DHA are sensitive to oxygen, light, and heat. When they oxidize, hydroperoxides are formed first, followed by aldehydes and other compounds that cause the oil’s quality, taste, and aroma to deteriorate.

Three oxidation parameters are therefore specified for finished soft capsules:

  • peroxide value (PV) ≤ 5 meq/kg,
  • p-anizidine number p-AV ≤ 20,
  • Total Oxidation Index (TOTOX) ≤ 26.

Checking all three parameters provides a more accurate picture than the peroxide value alone.

Not necessarily. A fishy aftertaste can occur even with high-quality oil, especially if the capsules are taken on an empty stomach or shortly before bedtime. It may help to take them with a main meal or to split the daily dose into two portions.

However, a strong musty or yellowish odor, or damaged or leaking capsules, are not normal. Do not use such a product and contact the seller.

Yes, omega-3 supplements do not need to be taken in cycles. When taking them long-term, stick to the recommended daily dose and do not exceed it; also take into account any other supplements containing EPA and DHA, as an overdose is possible.

Generally speaking, yes. Omega-3 can be combined, for example, with vitamin D, magnesium, or multivitamins. If you are taking multiple supplements containing fish oil or krill oil, add up their total EPA and DHA content.

The recommended daily dose provides 1,380 mg of EPA + DHA and is not considered a high dose for most adults. However, if you are taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, have a blood clotting disorder, or are scheduled for surgery or an invasive procedure, consult your doctor before use. Your doctor should decide whether to discontinue use.

No. This product contains fish oil derived from anchovies; therefore, it is not intended for people with allergies to fish or any of the product’s ingredients.

DHA is an important omega-3 fatty acid during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well; however, it is advisable to choose a specific supplement and dosage after consulting a doctor. For children, the dosage must be adjusted according to their age, diet, and ability to safely swallow a soft gel capsule. Therefore, do not give children the adult daily dose without a pediatrician’s recommendation.

Store them in their original, tightly sealed container in a dry, dark place at the temperature specified by the manufacturer. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Close the container immediately after each use.

A small supply is not a problem if the expiration date is sufficiently far off, but large, long-term supplies are not ideal. Oxidation proceeds slowly even during storage. At a dose of two capsules per day, one 100-capsule package will last approximately 50 days. We recommend not opening multiple packages at the same time and using the package with the shortest expiration date first.
